Rochester is being touted as a great place to live, find a job and start a business by two national publications.
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named its 10 Best Cities for the Next Decade — with a focus on locales that specialize in innovative thinking.
Rochester was ranked sixth because, it's "growing like a beanstalk with its high-tech, health-care, and hospitality industries."
The magazine says the city has built on Mayo Clinic's "rock-solid foundation."
Rochester Area Economic Development Inc. President Gary Smith told the magazine that the synergy among the city's resources has been well cultivated and is paying dividends. "Let me tell you, we are in a place where the rubber meets the road," Smith said.
The magazine says more than 20 technology-related films have opened up in the Rochester area over the past 10 years and that the city welcomes about 2.7 million visitors that pour $520 million into the economy.
This year's picks are profiled in the July issue, which will be on newsstands June 8.
To identify the winners, Kiplinger's teamed up with Kevin Stolarick, research director at the Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank that studies economic prosperity.
"New ideas generate new businesses," said Stolarick, who this year evaluated U.S. cities for growth and growth potential. "In the places where innovation works, it really works. People in fields such as science, engineering, architecture, and education are catalysts of vitality and livability in a city."
"It's no coincidence that economic vitality and livability go hand in hand," said Kiplinger's senior editor Robert Frick. "Creativity in music, arts and culture, plus neighborhoods and recreational facilities that rank high for 'coolness,' attract like-minded professionals who go on to cultivate a region's business scene. All of these factors make our 2010 Best Cities more than just great places to live. They're also great places to start a business or find a job."
In addition, Rochester has again been named to Outdoor Life's list of "Top Towns." Rochester is ranked No. 12 overall and No. 1 on their list of places to "Live Like a King!"
The magazine described Rochester as a place where "outdoorsmen enjoy tremendous Canada goose hunting in the crop fields outside of town."
The city's proximity to to the Driftless area was also noted. The surrounding area offers great trout fishing and deer, turkey and grouse hunting.
It's fitting that Rochester will host the Outdoor Writers Association of America conference on June 9-13.
The recent recognitions come on the heels of the city's recent "Bicycle Friendly Communities" award from the American League of Bicyclists.
